Photo by @taylorglenn // A wild horse in the vast and surreal landscape of the northern region of Namib Naukluft National Park, Namibia. This zone is particularly striking in that it is so unbelievably devoid of anything. And then we came across a band of horses somehow finding a way to forage grass. It turns out that moisture evaporating off the ocean makes its way into the landscape as fog and provides just enough water for wild grass to grow. It is extremely sparse but somehow these creatures survive. Follow @taylorglenn for more from Namibia and beyond.

Photo by @jonathan_irish // My new year started off in one of my favorite places in the world: Antarctica. It’s always an honor to be in this amazing place, and to spend some time getting familiar with penguins and icebergs. Each time I come here, I try to push myself a bit more to get the more difficult shots. This one has been on my list for a while: penguins jumping out of the water onto icebergs. It’s not an easy shot, cuz the action happens fast and you have to anticipate the moment before it happens. But I was lucky enough to get this Adelie penguin in mid flight. Follow me @jonathan_irish for more images like from Antarctica and around the world.

photo by @andrea_frazzetta // The Northern lights over the island of Austvågøy, in the Lofoten archipelago, Norway. The otherworldly aurora borealis, or northern lights, begin high in the Earth’s atmosphere—at altitudes from 60 to more than 250 miles—when charged particles from the sun become trapped in the Earth's magnetic field. The result is a colorful, dancing light show. The Lofoten Islands are draped across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. This rare wilderness outpost offers an untrammeled landscape of majestic mountains, deep fjords, seabird colonies, and long, wave-swept beaches. Photo by @max.lowe // I never figured you might actually be able to travel to Middle Earth, but there is a very distinct reason Peter Jackson decided to film his epic here. Looking back down the Waimakariri River Valley as the sun lit up every layer of the landscape into the sky beyond it didn’t take much imagination to place yourself there with the fellowship. Photo by @CristinaMittermeier // A group of “Pantaneiro cowboys” race through Brazil’s Pantanal region, a vast savanna that becomes the world’s largest wetland during the rainy season. Over a century ago, an ambitious group of people learned to make a living in this difficult landscape by ranching cattle, as they continue to do today. This unique ecosystem is home to many dangerous animals including snakes, caimans, and jaguars. Fearless and proud, these cowboys prosper as they co-exist with the wildlife and elements in this challenging, yet beautiful area. #FollowMe at @CristinaMittermeier for more photos of some our planet’s most unique ecosystems. #Brazil #cowboy #wetland #ecosystem #photography

The World at Night (TWAN) project
Known as the Balanced Rock near Moab in Utah, the exotic formation sits under the rising crescent moon in this single-exposure photograph. Note the Earthshine light also known as Da Vinci Glow. About 500 years ago he described it as sunlight reflected from the Earth shining on the night side of the moon.
Swipe left to see the rock in daytime. At 128 feet (39 m) height, it’s the size of a 12-story building.

Photo by @PaulNicklen // The lush, protected wilderness of the Great Bear Rainforest supports intricate relationships between species and habitat. Here, the Kermode bear, also known as the spirit bear, takes advantage of the diversity of this ecosystem, utilizing the intertidal zone, estuaries, and rivers to the forests and mountains. Along the way, these bears give back to the wilderness as the salmon carcasses upon which they feed replenish the land with nutrients. They are important characters in maintaining the interconnected and delicate cycle of life here. #FollowMe at @PaulNicklen and explore my feed for more photos of spirit bears, which are found exclusively in British Columbia. #spiritbear #BritishColumbia #ecosystem #balance #photography
