Photo by @CristinaMittermeier | A group of gentoo penguins rockets up from the deep as they head towards the shore. Gentoo penguins have powerful flippers, allowing them to travel up to 22 miles an hour underwater, the fastest speed of any diving bird. This split-shot reveals the excitement, happening just below the clear blue waves off this SubAntarctic coast as the penguins hurry back to the colony to feed their chicks while avoiding the ever-present southern sea lions waiting to ambush them. #FollowMe at @CristinaMittermeier for more photos of penguins. #gentoo #underwaterphotography #wildlife #nature

Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto | Underground in China lies a world that is like no other. China boasts some of the largest and most spectacular caves in the world and we had the honour to explore them and photograph them. Formed over tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of years by dripping water, this giant speleothem stalagmite stands in the center of this giant cave passage. In total darkness it is impossible to grasp the true scale of it, but throw light around it for a photograph and all is revealed.

Photo by @bertiegregory | The west coast of Vancouver Island is home to an incredible ecosystem consisting of rainforest covered mountains which drop all the way down to a wave battered shoreline.Sadly much of this coast’s old growth rainforest has been lost to logging. We must protect the forest that’s left, not only because it’s beautiful and a home to countless creatures, but because like all forests, it gives us so many things that we take for granted like the fresh air we breathe. #britishcolumbia #photography #wildlife #coast

Photo by @bertiegregory | A Gray whale lifts its tail flukes to dive in the shallow waters off the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Gray whales breed in the warm tropical warmers off the coast of Mexico. They then migrate north to richer waters to feed. Although the individual pictured decided to spend the summer off the coast of British Columbia, some Grays head all the way up to Alaska on one of the longest mammal migrations on the planet.

Photo by @CristinaMittermeier | Off the coast of Brazil in the emerald waters of the Abrolhos Reef, the southernmost reef in the Americas, a traditional spear fisherman focuses on the fish below him awaiting the opportune moment to free dive down. Once protected as a Marine reserve, the new government of Brazil has ordered that the protections be removed to allow oil exploration. Needless to say, an oil spill would be devastating to the unique ecosystem. #FollowMe at @CristinaMittermeier for more stories and photos from around the world. #Brazil #fisherman #conservation

Photo by @mborowick | Icelandic sheep, like this group here are only a few of about 800,000 in the country, which is more than double the human population. During the summertime sheep from all over the island run free and often travel great distances from where they began. In September, the farmers partake in Réttir, which is a nationwide roundup of all the sheep to return them to their original farms. This tradition has been taking place for more than 300 years and has become something of a tourism experience to those interested in Icelandic culture.
